Why We Don't Recommend Button-Level Tracking in Google Tag Manager (And What to Do Instead)

The answer, technically, is yes. Google Tag Manager is fully capable of firing tracking events on individual button clicks across your entire site. You can build triggers around button text, CSS classes, element IDs, or click URLs. You can capture data on every single interactive element if you want to.

But we almost never recommend it. And when clients push for it, we spend time explaining why — because the instinct behind the request is right, but the implementation strategy is wrong in ways that tend to get more expensive and more frustrating the longer they go unaddressed.

This post lays out our thinking: why button-level tracking creates more problems than it solves, what we recommend instead, and how a cleaner approach to event tracking will actually tell you more about what's happening on your site than a exhaustive click map ever could.

Where the Instinct Comes From — And Why It's Understandable

Before we get into the problems, it's worth taking the request seriously on its own terms. When someone asks for button-level tracking, they're not being unreasonable. They're expressing something real: they want to understand how people are using their site. They want visibility into behavior. They want data that helps them make decisions.

Those are good goals. The analytics tools exist precisely to serve those goals. The question isn't whether to track user behavior — of course you should — it's whether granular button-level tracking is the right mechanism for doing it.

When you build your analytics around the buttons that exist on your site, you're measuring your site's architecture, not your users' intent. The buttons that are easiest to track aren't necessarily the ones that matter most. The clicks that happen most often aren't necessarily the ones that indicate something meaningful about the user's relationship with your business.

What gets measured gets managed — that's a cliché because it's true. What We Recommend Instead: Key Event Tracking Across the Site

Rather than trying to capture every click everywhere, we help clients identify the events that actually signal something meaningful — and track those deliberately, across the pages where they matter.

The framing we use internally is this: what are the moments on this site where a user has done something that indicates intent, progress, or completion? Not every interaction. The interactions that mean something.

Every site is different, but the pattern of what tends to matter is consistent:

Form submissions. Not the button click that initiates the submission — the confirmed submission event itself. Did someone actually complete and send that contact form? Request a quote? Sign up for a newsletter? The form submission is a real signal of intent. The click on the submit button is a step along the way that tells you almost nothing on its own, especially since form submissions frequently fail validation and the click never results in an actual submission.

Phone number clicks. On mobile especially, a tap on a phone number is one of the strongest behavioral signals a website can generate. Someone who taps your phone number on their phone is almost certainly trying to call you. That's a high-intent action that's straightforward to track in GTM and genuinely valuable to see in your reports — both in terms of raw volume and in terms of which pages are generating it.

File downloads. If your site has resources, guides, PDFs, spec sheets, pricing documents, or any other downloadable content, knowing which files are being downloaded and from which pages gives you real information about what content is resonating and where users are in their decision-making process.

Outbound link clicks. If your site sends users to third-party pages — a scheduling tool, a payment portal, a partner platform, an external application — tracking when that handoff happens is important context. Once a user leaves your domain, they're out of your analytics picture entirely. Knowing where and when that exit happens helps you understand the shape of the complete user journey even when part of it lives off your site.

Scroll depth on key pages. A pageview tells you someone landed on a page. It tells you nothing about whether they read it. On service pages, landing pages, long-form content, or any page where engagement depth matters, scroll depth tracking gives you a meaningful proxy for whether your content is actually being consumed. Knowing that 70% of users who land on your main services page scroll past the halfway point — and that the number drops to 30% on a specific secondary page — is actionable. Knowing that your "Read More" button was clicked 18 times is not.

Video interactions. If video is a meaningful part of your content strategy, tracking play events and completion rates tells you whether people are actually watching. A page with an embedded video has a dramatically different engagement story depending on whether 10% of visitors play it or 60% do — and whether those who play it watch the whole thing or drop off in the first 30 seconds.

This is a much shorter list than "every button on the site." That's intentional. Each item on it is connected to something real — a lead, a signal of purchase intent, a meaningful behavior worth understanding. When you look at your analytics with an implementation built around these events, you're looking at signal. When you look at analytics built around button clicks, you're mostly looking at noise.

How This Changes the Implementation in GTM

Beyond the strategic argument, the practical implementation differences are significant enough to be worth laying out explicitly.

Button-level tracking in GTM typically relies on click triggers — triggers that fire when a user clicks an element matching a particular CSS selector, containing specific text, or with a specific ID or class attribute. These are inherently fragile because they're tightly coupled to the frontend code of the site. Any change to the HTML or CSS that affects those selectors can break the trigger without breaking anything visible on the site itself. Your developer makes a perfectly reasonable styling change, the class name gets updated, and your tag silently stops firing.

Key event tracking, by contrast, is typically built on more stable foundations. Form submission events are often triggered by confirmation page loads or dataLayer pushes that the form tool itself generates — things that are tied to the functional outcome of the form, not the visual appearance of the button. Phone number click tracking can be built around the href attribute of the link, which is almost never changed even when the display copy is updated. File download tracking can be triggered by file extension patterns in the click URL rather than anything specific to the element's appearance.

The result is an implementation that's more resilient to site changes, requires less ongoing maintenance, and breaks less frequently in ways that are hard to detect.

The event taxonomy in GA4 is cleaner too. When your events are named form_submit, phone_click, pdf_download, outbound_click, and video_play, your reports are readable at a glance. The event names map to real things that happen in the real world. When your events are named after button text — "Get Started Click," "Learn More Click," "Submit Click," "Read More Click," "Download Click" — you need institutional knowledge of your own site to interpret what you're looking at, and that knowledge erodes over time as the site evolves and team members change.

And when you go to configure conversions — the events that represent real value and that feed into campaign optimization, automated bidding, and performance reporting — you're working from a clean, intentional list rather than trying to identify the meaningful signals buried in a long list of click events.

When Button-Level Tracking Actually Makes Sense

To be clear: there are legitimate use cases for tracking specific UI interactions, and we're not arguing that granular click data is never appropriate. We're arguing that it shouldn't be the foundation of your analytics strategy.

If you're running a structured A/B test on a specific call-to-action element and you need to compare click rates between variants, that's a defined, time-bounded use case where precise click tracking serves a specific question. Build it, use it for the test, and retire it when the test is over.

If you're doing a UX audit on a specific page and you want to understand interaction patterns in detail, a targeted GTM trigger on that page — or a session recording tool like Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar — might be exactly the right approach. Again, it's tied to a specific question with a beginning and an end.

If your development team is using a component-based frontend architecture and has built a dataLayer integration that pushes structured interaction data into GTM consistently and maintainably, then richer interaction tracking becomes viable in a way that it isn't when it depends on fragile CSS selectors.

The common thread in all of these cases is the same: you know what question you're trying to answer before you build the tracking. You're not collecting data in hopes that something turns out to be useful someday. You're answering a specific question with a specific measurement that you've thought through in advance.

That distinction — building your analytics around questions you actually have, rather than data you might hypothetically want — is the principle underneath everything we recommend to clients.

What This Looks Like When It's Working Well

When a site has a well-implemented key event tracking setup, using it feels different from using a bloated button-click implementation. Reports are readable without a translation guide. Conversion events are meaningful. You can look at which pages are generating form submissions and phone clicks and actually connect that back to traffic sources, campaigns, and content decisions.

You can answer questions like: which traffic source is driving the most qualified leads? Which service page is converting visitors at the highest rate? Are people who watch our video more likely to submit a contact form? Those are the questions that move a business forward. And they're answerable with clean event data built around outcomes.

What you can't answer as easily with button-level tracking: anything that requires you to connect clicks to consequences. Because the clicks are disconnected from the outcomes, the data doesn't flow the way you need it to. You end up exporting spreadsheets and trying to manually correlate things that a well-structured implementation would have connected automatically.

The Bottom Line

Google Tag Manager and GA4 are genuinely powerful tools, and the impulse to use that power comprehensively is understandable. More tracking feels like more control. But more data is not the same thing as better data, and an analytics implementation that tries to capture everything frequently ends up telling you less than one that captures the right things deliberately.

The framework we come back to every time is simple: what are the moments on this site that indicate something meaningful about a user's intent or their progress toward becoming a customer? Track those. Track them cleanly, in ways that are stable and maintainable, with event names that mean something when you look at them six months from now. And resist the temptation to fill your analytics account with click data that sounds like insight but functions like noise.

Auto-collected click data tends to produce the same noise problem as manually built button triggers, just faster and with less structure. You end up with a high volume of raw interaction data that requires significant post-processing to interpret, and that interpretation work usually reveals that most of what you collected wasn't worth collecting. Starting from a defined list of meaningful events is almost always more efficient than starting from everything and trying to filter down.

What About Heatmap Tools Like Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity — Don't Those Give Us the Button-Level Visibility We're Looking For?

They do, and for certain use cases they're genuinely valuable — particularly when you're trying to understand navigation patterns on a specific page, identify confusing UI elements, or evaluate whether users are finding what they're looking for. We don't have anything against heatmap and session recording tools. What we'd push back on is using them as a substitute for a thoughtful analytics strategy, or assuming that visual click data answers the same questions as outcome-based event tracking. Knowing where people click on a page is useful UX information. Knowing which pages and traffic sources are generating form submissions and phone calls is business information. Both have their place, but they're answering different questions and shouldn't be conflated.

How Many Events Is the Right Number to Track?

There's no universal answer, but for most business websites — service companies, professional firms, local businesses, informational sites — a well-structured implementation usually has somewhere between five and twelve meaningful events. That number goes up for e-commerce sites or sites with complex user flows, but for a typical site the list of things that genuinely indicate user intent is shorter than most people expect. If your event list is pushing past twenty or thirty distinct events and you're not running a complex transactional platform, that's usually a sign that some of those events aren't connected to real questions — they were added because they were possible to track, not because anyone had a specific reason to track them.

Will This Approach Work With Google Ads and Meta Ads Campaign Optimization?

Yes — and in fact, a clean key event setup tends to work significantly better for paid campaign optimization than a bloated button-click implementation. Google Ads and Meta both use conversion signals to optimize delivery, bidding, and audience targeting. The quality of those signals matters enormously. When your conversion events represent real outcomes — form submissions, phone clicks, confirmed purchases — the platform's optimization algorithms have meaningful data to work with. When your conversion events are button clicks that may or may not correspond to actual user intent, you're feeding noise into a system that's trying to find signal. Cleaning up your event tracking and configuring the right conversions in GA4 and your ad platforms is often one of the highest-leverage improvements a business can make to campaign performance.

How Do We Know If Our Current Analytics Setup Is Actually Tracking Things Correctly?

The honest answer is that most businesses don't — and when we audit GTM implementations, broken or misfiring tags are more common than working ones. The most straightforward way to check is to use GTM's Preview mode to walk through your own site and verify that the tags you expect to fire are actually firing on the events you expect them to fire on. In GA4, the DebugView report lets you see events flowing in real time as you navigate the site. Beyond that, looking at historical data for obvious anomalies — events with implausibly high or low volumes, conversion rates that don't match business reality, gaps in data that correspond to site changes — will usually surface the biggest problems.
