Most of the audits we publish start with a thin profile. This one doesn't. FirstKey Homes sits at an Authority Score of 38, which Semrush rates "Very good." That's the strongest score we've published, and it's earned: Vice, WCNC, WTHR, 11Alive, Atlanta News First and the Dallas Morning News all link to the site.

So this audit isn't about whether the profile is weak. It's about where the authority sits, what it's pointed at, and why a domain this strong still gets roughly nine in ten of its organic visits from people who already knew the name.

Same disclosure as always: FirstKey Homes is not a client. It's the audit every prospect gets, done in the open.

Part 1: The headline numbers

Semrush's read on firstkeyhomes.com as of October 1, 2026:

Two things deserve a straight read.

The authority is real. Calibration: our own domain, under a year old, was 15 in August. A franchise Nissan store with a decade of history was 25. FirstKey Homes is at 38 with 1.2K referring domains, and the best of those come from national and local news. That's the profile of a company the press treats as a real subject.

The traffic is almost all people who already know the name. Of 108K organic visits, 96.9K are branded. "firstkey homes" alone accounts for about 45% of all organic traffic. Non-branded traffic, the visits from people who didn't already know the company, is 11.2K a month. That number is up 153%, which is the best sign in the data, but it's still about a tenth of the total.

The intent breakdown says the same thing:

Source: Semrush Organic Rankings. Keywords can carry more than one intent, so traffic columns overlap slightly.

Transactional searches are 9% of the keywords and under 3% of the traffic. And look at the pages that earn the visits: the homepage, /current-residents (2.74% of traffic) and two support-center pages. A meaningful share of "organic traffic" is current residents looking for the portal. That's useful for the business, but it isn't lead generation.

The pattern shows up in the rankings too. In Semrush's latest position changes, "homes for rent colorado springs" (2.9K searches a month) and "rent colorado springs houses" (5.4K) sit at positions 17 and 19, on page two. "overland park ks homes for rent" is at 4, but it carries only 110 searches a month.

Part 2: Where the 1.2K referring domains come from

Break the linking domains down by their own authority and the picture is a barbell.

Source: Semrush Backlink Analytics, pulled October 1, 2026 · Ritner Digital

Seventy-eight percent of the linking domains score 10 or lower. But 123 domains score above 30, and 47 score above 50. Those 47 are why the site is at 38 and not at 8. The score is being carried by a small, strong core, and the other 943 domains are mostly along for the ride.

The other breakdowns:

  • Top-level domains. 57% are .com (693). Another 6% are .in (78) and 4% are .shop (52). Zero are .gov or .edu. A further 32% (387) sit in "other" TLDs.

  • Countries. The U.S. leads with 382 domains (33%). Singapore is second with 194 (17%), then Moldova and Germany at 19 each. That's the same Singapore-and-Moldova layer we documented in the Mount Holly Nissan and Wade's Care First audits.

  • Categories. The biggest group is online services (99), then IT (50). Real estate is third with 47 domains, about 4% of the profile.

  • Similar profiles. Semrush's closest matches are brandywinehomesusa.com, meeksair.com, hamelsac.com, hcshomecare.com and lenoymed.com: home-service and medical sites, not rental-housing peers. They're sites that share linking domains, which is what a shared link-network layer looks like.

  • Follow vs. nofollow. 54% followed (4.9K), 46% nofollow (4.1K). That's more nofollow than we saw on Wade's Care First (69% followed). It's consistent with a mix of news, social and app-store links, but the export would confirm it.

  • Link types. 87% text, 12% image.

  • Infrastructure. 1.2K referring IPs across 602 subnets, so the links aren't coming from one server farm.

Two caveats, stated plainly. First, this doesn't mean anyone bought these links. Sites get pulled into scraper networks without the owner knowing, and large brands attract them. Second, Google is generally good at ignoring junk links. The practical cost is that "1.2K referring domains" overstates the trust in the profile. The number doing the work is closer to 120.

We also can't give you a toxicity read. The Semrush overview shows the Backlink Audit tool hasn't been set up for this domain, so the Overall Toxicity Score is blank. That's the first thing we'd run.

Part 3: Where the links land

Source: Semrush top indexed pages by referring domains, pulled October 1, 2026. Domains can link to more than one version, so the rows aren't additive.

Four versions of one homepage appear in the top five. Only the first is the one the company presumably wants ranked, and the other three together carry more referring-domain relationships than the canonical does. This is the same pattern we found at Mount Holly Nissan: a decade of old links that were never updated.

If every variant 301-redirects in a single hop to https://www.firstkeyhomes.com/, most of that equity consolidates and this is a housekeeping item. If any variant chains or misfires, the leak is large. We haven't tested the redirects here. It's a ten-minute check, and it's the first line of the roadmap.

The second thing to notice is what's missing. The only non-homepage page in the top five is the careers subdomain. Deep pages almost never earn links. The exception is in the next section, and it's the most useful finding in this audit.

Part 4: The best links, one by one

Semrush's backlink list, sorted by the authority of the linking page. Source titles are clickable and open the live page.

Four patterns come out of that list.

The press is doing the work. Six of the ten links are news or editorial: Vice, WCNC, WTHR, the Dallas Morning News, Atlanta News First and 11Alive. Two of the three highest-authority news links go to the company's own scam-awareness page. That page is the one thing in this profile that proves content can earn links here.

Most press links land on the homepage, and nothing else. WTHR, the Dallas Morning News, 11Alive and Atlanta News First all link to the homepage, because it's the only page that fits the sentence. A reporter writing about squatting or rental regulation has nowhere more specific to send the reader.

The Atlanta News First link points at a URL carrying Google Ads parameters. Someone grabbed the link from an ad-tracked visit. The equity attaches to a parameterized URL, so the canonical tag needs to be consolidating it back to the clean homepage. We'd confirm that it is.

The top of the list is clean. Unlike Wade's Care First and Mount Holly Nissan, we found no link-seller spam pages in the top ten. The noise is in the long tail, which the overview doesn't expose. The full export would settle it.

Part 5: The real finding. The authority is earned but isn't converting

Put Parts 1 through 4 together and the shape is clear. The press links to FirstKey Homes because it's a named company in stories about rental scams, squatting, regulation and financing. Google answers branded searches with the homepage and the resident portal. And everyone else, the renter in Colorado Springs who has never heard of the company, finds a site that ranks on page two.

Google's AI answers are mostly not citing the site. Semrush shows Google linking to firstkeyhomes.com in AI Overviews on 374 keywords. On another 3.7K keywords, an AI Overview appears and the site isn't linked. That's about 9% coverage on the searches where an AI answer shows up.

AI engines do talk about the company, and the sources aren't all its own. Semrush counts 315 mentions across ChatGPT (37), Google AI Overviews (159), AI Mode (49) and Gemini (70). The top cited sources are firstkeyhomes.com itself (141), Zillow (53) and Reddit (47). Zillow and Reddit are platforms where tenants and landlords talk about each other. We can't see the sentiment from the overview, and reading those cited threads is the first step before anyone writes a strategy around AI visibility.

Test and staging environments are visible in search. Semrush lists fktestingenvironments.com (108 shared keywords) and firstkey-passport.azurewebsites.net (90) as the site's top organic competitors, and dev-fss.firstkeyhomes.com ranks for 62 keywords of its own. Those names suggest the company's own testing environments are being indexed. If so, they split authority and could surface unfinished pages. We'd confirm with the team and noindex or lock them down.

The real competitors are portals. After the staging domains, the competitor list is rently.com (209 shared keywords), securecafe.com (167) and ratethelandlord.org (36). That's a screening tool, a Yardi resident-portal domain and a landlord-review site, not other landlords.

Part 6: Why the usual backlink playbook is wrong here

A generalist SEO looking at 1.2K referring domains would sell more of them. For a profile at 38, that misses.

The profile already has 943 near-zero domains. Adding more doesn't raise authority. It dilutes it.

The links that matter are editorial and local. A link from Vice or WTHR can't be bought. A listing on a local government, housing-authority or law-enforcement partnership page is the next tier, and the profile has none.

The biggest wins aren't new links. Consolidating four homepage versions into one, locking down the test domains, and giving the press somewhere better to link than the homepage are all free.

Part 7: The roadmap, in priority order

Tier 1: Consolidate and secure (weeks 1–4, near-zero cost)

  1. Verify the four homepage versions each 301 in a single hop to https://www.firstkeyhomes.com/, and that tracking-parameter URLs canonicalize to the clean homepage.

  2. Set up Semrush's Backlink Audit to get a toxicity score, then pull the full referring-domain export and tag every link.

  3. Lock down the test environments. Confirm fktestingenvironments.com, firstkey-passport.azurewebsites.net and dev-fss.firstkeyhomes.com are the company's own, then noindex them or put them behind authentication.

  4. Check the Uptodown APK listing with the app team. A third-party mirror of the resident app is a brand-safety question before it's an SEO one.

  5. Update the highest-value legacy links at the source. Start with the links pointing at http:// non-www.

Tier 2: Give the press somewhere to link (months 1–3)

The scam page proves the model. Build the equivalents:

  • A squatting and unauthorized-occupancy resource, with the company's policy and law-enforcement partnerships (the 11Alive story is the hook).

  • A local rental regulation guide for the markets where ordinances are changing, like the Carmel, Indiana coverage on WTHR.

  • A press page with fact sheets, market-by-market numbers and a named contact, so reporters link to a source instead of the homepage.

Tier 3: Real market pages (months 2–6)

The Colorado Springs rental terms rank at 17 and 19, with 8.3K combined monthly searches. Build market pages with real content: neighborhoods, pet and application policies, what a resident can expect, and links to live listings. One real page per major market. Not a template with the city name swapped.

Tier 4: Institutional links (months 2–9)

The profile has zero .gov and zero .edu links. Where the company has relationships to document, there are natural homes: police and municipal partnership pages, housing-authority and relocation resources, chambers of commerce, and university or employer relocation pages. Each one is a link the press stories already imply.

Tier 5: Understand what AI is reading (ongoing)

Read the Reddit threads and Zillow pages Semrush shows AI engines citing. Then fix what the company controls: a support center and FAQ that answer the questions residents are asking, Organization schema, and consistent company facts across profiles. Don't try to manage the conversation on Reddit. Be the better source.

Part 8: What we would not do

No link packages or directory blasts. 78% of the profile is already near zero.

No mass disavowing before the export and toxicity score are reviewed. At this size, a careless disavow can cost more than it saves.

No city-swapped template pages. They're a penalty risk, and they'd repeat the problem the scam page solved.

No chasing branded rankings. The company is already #1 for its own name. The growth is elsewhere.

No purchased placements on news sites. The editorial links are the asset. A sponsored one next to them cheapens the rest.

Part 9: What success looks like, and when

Days 1–60. Homepage variants consolidated, test environments locked down, toxicity score and full export in hand. Expect cleaner reporting and a more accurate picture of which links are real. Don't expect traffic yet.

Days 60–180. Resource pages live, the first market pages published, press starting to link to them rather than the homepage. Expect non-branded traffic to keep climbing off the 11.2K base.

Days 180–365. Compounding. Institutional links arriving, the Colorado Springs terms moving off page two, and more of the AI answers linking to the site rather than around it.

Track four things: non-branded organic visits (currently 11.2K, about 10% of the total), referring domains above Authority Score 30 (currently 123), the share of AI Overview keywords where the site is cited (about 9%), and press links pointing at a page other than the homepage.

The short version

FirstKey Homes doesn't have a link problem. At an Authority Score of 38 with national and local press behind it, it has one of the strongest profiles we've published.

What it has is a conversion problem. The authority sits on four versions of one homepage, the press has nowhere better to link, the pages that rank for new renters sit on page two, and the traffic that does arrive is almost all people who already knew the name.

Consolidate the homepage. Lock down the test environments. Build more of what the scam page already proved. Then turn the market and institutional relationships into links, and let the 47 domains above Authority Score 50 finally work for a renter who has never heard of the company.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Authority Score of 38 good?

Yes. Semrush rates it "Very good." For calibration, it's well above the 25 we measured for a decade-old franchise dealership in August, and far above the 2 to 19 range of the other local businesses we've audited. It reflects real press coverage and a large base of linking domains.

Why does the site have 1.2K referring domains but only 123 above Authority Score 30?

Because 78% of the linking domains score 10 or lower. Many are the scraper and directory domains common to large brands. The score is carried by a core of about 120 domains, including national and local news.

Are the Singapore and .shop links hurting the site?

Probably not directly. Google is generally good at ignoring junk links. We can't give a toxicity read yet because the Backlink Audit tool hasn't been set up. That's the first step before anyone decides whether a disavow is warranted.

Why do 90% of organic visits come from branded searches?

Because the company is large and well-known, and the site is built to serve people who already know it: the homepage, a current-residents page and a support center. That's a strength for existing residents. The opportunity is the other 10%, which is growing fast.

Why does it matter that press links point at the homepage?

Because the homepage is the only page that fits a sentence like "FirstKey Homes said." When a story is about scams, squatting or local regulation, a dedicated page gives the reporter a better link and gives Google a reason to rank that page. The scam page already earns links from Vice and WCNC.

What are the fktestingenvironments.com and azurewebsites.net domains?

Semrush lists them as top organic competitors, and their names suggest they're the company's own testing environments. We haven't confirmed that. If they are, they're indexed when they probably shouldn't be, and the fix is simple.

How long will results take?

Technical fixes register within weeks. Press and institutional links build over two to three quarters. Meaningful movement in non-branded traffic and AI citations takes six to twelve months.

What do you need to go deeper?

The full Semrush referring-domain export, Backlink Audit set up on the domain, Google Search Console and Analytics access, and a look at the staging environments.
