Web Design · Mobile-first

Mobile-
First(05)
Built for the phone first.

Most of your visitors are on a phone, so I design for the small screen first: layouts reordered for phones, buttons big enough to tap, text you can read without zooming, one-tap calling and testing on real screen sizes before anything goes live.

What is mobile-first design?

Mobile-first design means designing for the phone screen first, then adapting it for bigger screens, instead of shrinking a desktop design down. It covers layout, button size, text size, calling and testing on real devices.

Why it matters

For most local businesses, more than half of website visitors are on a phone, and Google looks at the mobile version of your site when it decides how to rank it. A site that’s easy to use on a phone keeps visitors around and turns more of them into calls.

01 · Fit the screen

Phone layouts

Designed for the phone, not shrunk.

A three-column desktop page squeezed onto a phone is hard to use. I design the phone layout on its own, with the most important things first, the menu folded into one button and a call bar that stays put, using Squarespace’s separate mobile editing where it helps.

02 · Fit the screen

Tap targets

Big enough for a thumb.

Tiny links packed together lead to missed taps and frustrated visitors. Every button and link is at least 48 pixels tall with room around it, menus become big easy rows, and important actions are full-width buttons, not text links.

03 · Easy to read and call

Readable text

No pinching or zooming.

Body text is at least 16 to 17 pixels, dark on light with strong contrast, in short paragraphs broken up by headings and lists. Visitors can read your page with one hand on a bus, which keeps them on the page long enough to call.

04 · Easy to read and call

Click-to-call

One tap to your phone, any time.

Your number is a tap-to-call button in the header, in a sticky bar at the bottom and after each service. After hours, the button can switch to a callback request so you don’t miss people who find you at night.

05 · Prove it works

Mobile testing

Tested on real screen sizes.

Before launch and after every update, I check every page at real phone widths, from small iPhones to large Android phones and tablets, across Safari, Chrome and Samsung Internet. Forms, menus and call buttons are tested by hand, not assumed.
